Indian White - eye : A tiny, beautiful Bird
Indian White - eye
# Recently a cute & agile small bird sighted inside a garden during morning walk. We followed them and clicked some attractive photos displaying its beauty and action. It was having a distinctive white ring around its eyes, which draw our attention. Later we identified them as ‘Indian White – eye’ or ‘Oriental White - eye ’
Salient features of India White - eye :
· Unique white – eye ring, discontinue at front, which resembles as spectacles.
· It has green to yellowish – green upperparts, bright yellow throat and vent, whitish underparts and black beak.
· Their call is plaintive ‘cheer or prree – u’. Their song is a tinkling jingle.
· A widespread resident bird of India, having size about 10 cm. Normally found in open forest, grooves, gardens, orchards and mangroves.
· They feed mainly on small insects, fruits, flowers, nectar etc. They move in small groups.
· Their scientific name is ‘Zosterops palpebrosus’ and they belong to ‘Zosteropidae’ family.
· Its Hindi name is ‘बबूना or मोतीचूर ‘.
Indian White - eye
· As per IUCN Red list, they are considered as ‘Least Concern’ (LC), but their number is decreasing due to increased human activities and loss of their natural habitat. We should make endeavour for survival of these beautiful birds.
