· ‘Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary’ in Rajasthan (India) has always been a dream destination for bird watchers. Recently we got invitation from one of our college friend to attend destination marriage ceremony at Laxmi Vilas Palace, Bharatpur. We readily agreed and utilized this opportunity to visit Keoladeo Bird Sanctuary.
· A visit to this sprawling bird sanctuary is truly mesmerizing. Earlier we had visited Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary, Harike wetland, Parvati – Arga Bird Sanctary etc. which were smaller in extent. The area of Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary is so large that it takes at least 02 days to have a glimpse of its length & breadth.
· It is known as different names. Since it is located in Bharatpur town of Rajasthan, it is called as ‘Bhartapur Bird Sanctuary’. Due to presence of an old Shiva (known as Keoladeo) temple within its periphery, it is famous as ‘Keoladeo National Park’. It is also known as ‘Ghana Bird Sanctuary’ because of its dense forested area.
· Ghana Bird Sanctuary is mainly famous for native as well as migratory birds visiting this sanctuary as far as from Siberia, Central Asia, Himalayan region, China etc. Due to its unique avian biodiversity and presence of a number of bird species, it was declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site in year 1985.
Salient Features of Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary:
· Overall Area of sanctuary : 2873 Hectares
· Natural habitat for more than 350 Birds Species.
· Managed by Rajasthan Forest Department.
· It is a Ramsar Site since October 1981.
· It is a mosaic of Wetlands, Grasslands, and Woodlands & Swamps.
· It is home to 140 species of Waterfowl, 372 species of Plants, 34 species of Mammals, 57 species of Fish, 14 species of Snakes, 05 species of Lizards, 03 species of Geckos, 07 species of Turtles, 08 species of Amphibians, 71 species of Butterflies, 16 species of Dragonflies & 08 species of Spiders. It is really interesting to have opportunity to sight such a large number of species from animal as well as plant kingdom.
· It is located in the middle of Central Asian Migratory Flyway due to which a large number of migratory birds visit this site during winter season.

# A visit to Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary takes us nearer to the Nature and imparts peace & tranquillity to our mind & soul. It displays glimpses of vibrant colours of birds and other species. It gives us unique opportunity for ‘Shinrin-yoku’ (i.e. Forest Bath). This sanctuary needs our help & support for its conservation and further development.
