Nawababganj Bird Sanctuary : A Magnificent Home to Birds


· Located mid-way between Lucknow and Kanpur city, Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary is home to a number of resident as well as migratory birds. Species of aquatic and terrestrial birds, some globally threatened / endangered birds, may be sighted inside the sanctuary. Due to presence of various species of birds in this wetland, it has been declared as a ‘Ramsar site’ on 19th Sept., 2019. (The ‘Convention on wetlands’ held at ‘Ramsar’ city in Iran in the year 1971 for conservation and sustainable use of wetlands across the world.)

· It renamed as ‘Shaheed Chandrasekhar Azad Bird Sanctuary in the year 2015.The sanctuary sprawling in 224 hectares area supports congregation of about 25,000 aquatic birds. A lecture hall along with display of details about birds, tourist rest house, restaurant, watch towers, cycle track and other public amenities have been provided by the Forest Department, Govt. of Uttar Pradesh.

Birds normally found in the sanctuary:

· Endangered/ threatened birds such as Woolly-necked Stork, Egyptian vulture, Pallas’s Fish Eagle, Lesser Adjutant and Sarus Crane.

· Aquatic birds sighted here are Purple Moorhen, Common Moorhen, Lesser Whistling Duck, Spotbill Duck, Purple Heron, Indian Pond Heron, Little Grebe, Cormorant, Bronze-winged Jacana, Pheasant-tailed Jacana, Mallard, Rudy Shelduck, Gadwalls, Northern Shoveler, Painted Stork, Common Coot, Ferrugineous Pochard, White-throated Kingfisher, Darter and many more.

· Terrestrial birds found here are Indian Roller, Green Bee-eaters, Magpie Robin, Brown-headed Barbet, Coppersmith Barbet, Black-shoulder Kite, Spotted Dove, Grey Hornbill, Red-wattled Lapwing etc.

· Besides, some species of beautiful butterflies and fresh water Turtle can also be seen. The large pond area and vegetation all around provide a soothing environment.
